Just in case there was not enough drama in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series for fans, a new program will add even more adrenaline in 2019. The Triple Truck Challenge is an incentive in the Truck Series that offers drivers a chance to win $500,000 in bonus money.
The new excitement begins in the month of June. While the Truck Series schedule makes its stops at Texas Motor Speedway (June 7), Iowa Speedway (June 15), and Gateway Motorsports Park (June 22), the Triple Truck Challenge will crank the intensity to another level. The Challenge will award a $50,000 bonus to the race winner of any of those three events, a $150,000 bonus to a driver who wins two of the three races, and a whopping $500,000 to any driver who wins all three.
This is somewhat similar to the current Dash 4 Cash in the NASCAR Xfinity series and also reminiscent of the Winston Million/No Bull 5 in the Cup Series in the 80s and 90s.
“It’s neat in the sense that it’s a little bit different,” said NASCAR’s Ben Kennedy, managing director of racing operations and international development. “There’s no qualifying ahead of time or any of that. It’s solely focused on the Truck Series drivers — you have to declare driver points in order to participate and then you’ve also got to win. It focuses on winning.”
As a former competitor in the Truck Series, Kennedy knows how much this bonus money could mean to a team. The potential to win an extra $50,000 is huge, not to mention a possible half a million.
“Putting half a million dollars on the line is certainly a big number for any team,” he said, “let alone a Truck Series team. I think anytime you can shake it up, especially in the summer, and especially at stand-alone tracks, it’s big. “We learned on the Xfinity side that running consecutively really helps build that energy and excitement. You don’t forget about it; it’s fresh on your mind.”
Kennedy is banking on the lure of a massive prize to make the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Season that much more exciting for fans. Johnny Sauter took the victory at Texas in the spring in 2018, and it was eventual champion Brett Moffitt who won at Iowa. Now full time in the Xfinity series, Justin Haley captured the win at Gateway. The Triple Truck Challenge kicks off on June 7, at Texas Motor Speedway.
