Practice 1
Teams that are racing in the Daytona 500 are required to use the same motor for the entire week, excluding the teams in the Clash. This means that several practices and a dual race will be on the engine before they even take the green flag for the Great American Race. Therefore teams are often hesitant to run many laps in any practice session at Daytona to keep their equipment fresh.
The first practice for the 500 happened after the wreck in Clash practice perhaps adding to that hesitancy. The sky was dark with clouds and the wind was blowing with moderate speed. Ty Dillion even commented on the weather on the team communications. “I don’t know if it’s the wind or what. Going through the section before the dogleg, it’s a little darty.” Almost all teams made single car runs, with a few guys going out in groups late in the session. In the end, Martin Truex Jr. had turned the fastest lap of just over 195 miles per hour for a time of 45.937 seconds around the 2.5-mile-track.
