Advance Auto Parts Clash Recap: Johnson wins after Rain and Crash

The Advance Auto Parts Clash is a 75 lap exhibition race at Daytona International Speedway. There will be a competition caution on Lap 25.

3:03 p.m. ET: Engines have fired and cars are pulling off pit road onto the track.

Green Flag: Paul Menard and Kyle Busch lead the field to the start of the Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona.

Lap 1: Kyle Busch gets a huge push from Ryan Newman on the backstretch to clear Paul Menard. Busch drops down in front of Menard to lead Lap 1.

Lap 2: Menard charges back with help from Brad Keselowski and Alex Bowman.

Lap 3: Single file pack on the high side. Menard, Keselowski, Bowman, Logano, Newman, Blaney, Truex Jr., Jones, Kurt Busch, Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson, Johnson, Hamlin, Almirola, Harvick, Suarez, McMurray, Elliott, Hamlin.

Lap 8: Caution out for rain showers. Menard has lead 6 of the 7 completed laps.

Lap 10: Cars being brought down pit road. The red flag is out for rain. Drivers have climbed out of their cars. Rain has stopped for now. Some adjustments being made on pit road to cars. Teams are allowed to work on the cars under the red flag during special events.

3:41 p.m. ET Drivers are heading back to their cars to get them fired back up.

Lap 11: Yellow flag is back out and cars have rolled back onto the track behind the pace car. Running order: Menard, Keselowski, Bowman, Logano, Blaney, Newman, Truex, KuBusch, Bowyer, KyBusch.

Lap 12: Elliott, Almirola, Harvick, McMurray all pit under yellow before going back to green.

Lap 13: Green flag is in the air. WoodBrothers/Penske cars lead the high side. Menard, Keselowski, Logano, Blaney.

Lap 16: Everyone is single-file on the high side. Restrictor plate freight train is here.

Lap 26: All but five cars pitted. Dillon, Bowman, McMurray, Harvick, and Truex Jr. stayed out. The yellow flag is out.

Lap 27: Aric Almirola speeding on pit road. Daniel Suarez jack man over the wall too soon. Both drop to the end of the line.

Lap 28: Dillon, Harvick, McMurray, Truex Jr. and Bowman make their stops under yellow.

Lap 29: Suarez, Almirola, Bowyer all pit under yellow to top off with fuel. Bowyer also reporting a tire rub that team is working on.

Lap 32: One lap til green. Menard, Blaney, Hamlin, Keselowski, Larson, Newman, Johnson, Elliott, KyBusch, Logano are the top 10. Teams reporting that rain is coming.

Lap 33: Green Flag is in the air. Cars almost immediately two and three wide. The intensity has really cranked up.

Lap 36: Back to single file high side freight train. Mist and slight drizzle are rolling in.

Lap 38: Race is over halfway, meaning the race would be official if it can’t be restarted. Caution is out for the rain.

Lap 43: Red flag is out for heavier rain. Menard is leading, and the race is official if NASCAR decides to call it.

4:39 p.m. ET Engines are refired and cars are about to roll onto the track.

Lap 45: Yellow flag is out. 1 to go at the line. Menard, Hamlin, Keselowski, Johnson, KyBusch, KuBusch leading the field. Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman pit for four tires and fuel.

Lap 46: Green flag is called off to clean up some fluid on the track. Teams are telling drivers that heavier rain is coming and could influence the end of the race. When the green flag comes out, there will be 28 laps to go.

Lap 47: Back to green flag racing. Menard grabs the lead on the high side. Double file all the way through the field. Inside line falling back but trying hard to form up.

Lap 48: Hamlin and Keselowski trying hard to get the inside line caught up to the front. Inside is about 20 car lengths behind the leaders.

Lap 53: Inside line is now led by Logano, Blaney, Keselowski, and Newman. Trying desperately to work their way up front.

Lap 54: Caution is out! Jimmie Johnson and Paul Menard collect each other and wreck almost the entire field.

Red Flag is out after a wreck that only three cars weren’t involved in.

The race has been called at 5:07 p.m. ET. Jimmie Johnson wins the Clash at Daytona.
