Daytona 500 Qualifying: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. takes the top spot

The front row for the Daytona 500 is set. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who moved from Roush Fenway Racing to JTG Daugherty Racing in the offseason, took the top spot with a time of 46.253 seconds around the famed 2.5 mile oval.

Alex Bowman’s No. 88 will join him on the front row. Both Bowman and Stenhouse will be locked into the front row of the Daytona 500. The rest of the starting lineup will be determined on Thursday, during the traditional Duels.

Justin Haley was the first open car to lock himself into the Daytona 500. His No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet was the fastest of the open cars, narrowly edging out Brendan Gaughan. Gaughan’s No. 62 locked himself into the Great American Race, also creating a stress free Thursday night for his team.

Gaughan’s joy created disappointment for Daniel Suarez, who will now have to race his way into the show. Chad Finchum, Reed Sorenson, Timmy Hill and JJ Yeley join him in a group that must race their way in on Thursday night during the duels.
