The announcement that Brendan Fraser had been up for the role of Superman in an unmade J.J. Abrams project set the internet alight recently. This news came during the actor’s recent appearance on Howard Stern where he revealed there was a “great deal of shenanigans and studio politics at work” which led him to lose out to another actor for the coveted role. It was also reported that Paul Walker and several other actors were also considered for the part during 2002 or 2003. Having missed out on playing Superman didn’t affect his long-term career though, as Brendan Fraser continued honing his skills as an actor over the following years and delivered some noteworthy performances in several films – even if they weren’t always commercially successful.
But it wasn’t until he appeared in ‘The Whale’, a critically acclaimed indie drama, that people truly started recognizing his talent once again – resulting in Fraser being nominated for an Oscar at last year’s Academy Awards ceremony. However, all was not well off-screen around this time, as 2018 also saw Fraser accusing former HFPA president Philip Berk of groping and assaulting him back during a 2003 Golden Globes event – something which Berk denied but would lead to Brendan vowing not to attend 2023 Golden Globes if nominated despite receiving an Academy Award nomination for ‘The Whale’. The reason behind this is due to issues with Berk still being involved with HFPA now despite these serious accusations against him; understandably leading Fraser to fear for his safety should he ever need to be around him again in any professional capacity whatsoever. It looks like Hollywood will still be seeing plenty more of Brendan Fraser moving forward into next year and beyond however, with multiple projects currently underway with no signs of slowing down just yet.
In addition to this, there are plans for a charitable foundation set up by the actor himself focused on helping those who have been victims of sexual harassment or assault in the entertainment industry – regardless if its someone famous or unknown alike. Whether it be continuing his stellar acting career or helping out those who need it most through philanthropy, one thing is clear: Brendan Fraser is still making waves within Hollywood even after losing out on playing Superman all those years ago!
